We are hiring a social video intern for summer and autumn

FiveThirtyEight is looking for an intern to work with our video and social groups in the summer of 2022. We are looking for a current student journalist or recent graduate who is passionate about accuracy, precision, video making and storytelling; Those who specialize in creating and cultivating communities on platforms like TikTok or Instagram; And eager to share with those audiences our uncomfortable, data-driven approach to sports and political journalism.

The main role of the intern will be to follow the video presence, engagement and social platform of FiveThirty. This means pitching and implementing short social videos while developing and refining Five-Thirty’s cross-platform voice and tone. Interns can describe or host videos if they are interested. The intern will help with general video viewer strategy and work with our senior designers and video journalists to reuse existing resources for distribution on our website and other platforms, including Instagram, YouTube and Twitter.

Journalism experience (whether from journalism classes, school papers, jobs or internships) is essential, such as some experience reporting in politics. But “politics” doesn’t just mean electoral politics – it could mean you have experience reporting on policy issues, social movements, how polarization affects your community, or anything else.

The social / video intern will report to the senior editor and senior video producer for social and viewers but will also have the opportunity to work with journalists across the newsroom.

Applicants must be committed to a full-time schedule from May or June to August. They must be a current student or have graduated in the last 18 months. This is a paying position and it can be done remotely.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Some experience in journalism
  • A strong understanding of US politics and extensive use of the news
  • Encouragement for FiveThirty and the kind of journalism we create
  • Demonstrated the experience of making compelling social videos
  • Some experience with Adobe Premiere. Applicants should be able to cut clips and add music
  • Experience writing scripts and storyboarding
  • Experience behind a camera (counting a smartphone camera)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Social copywriting experience
  • Experience using WordPress or a similar CMS to publish articles
  • Experience in front of the camera (a smartphone counts the camera)

This internship is a paid, distant internship and will run from May / June 2022 to January 2023. For the duration of the internship, the candidate must be available to work 40 hours / week in Eastern time.
